University of Novi Sad was founded on June 28, 1960. Today it comprises 14 Faculties located in the four major towns of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina: Novi Sad, Subotica, Zrenjanin, and Sombor. The University of Novi Sad can therefore be seen as a regional university. It is based on a long tradition of educational activities and a significant cultural heritage enriched by various peoples living in Vojvodina. It is a comprehensive university covering all major fields of study: Agriculture, Arts, Economics, Engineering, Languages and Social Sciences, Law, Medicine, Natural Sciences, Technology, Sport Sciences and Teacher Training. With nearly 40,000 students, 2,700 professors and assistants, and 1,200 members of non-teaching staff, the University of Novi Sad is now the second largest among six state universities in Serbia.

Having invested considerable efforts toward intensifying international cooperation and participating in the process of university reforms in Europe, the University of Novi Sad has come to be recognized as a reform-oriented university, both in the region and on the map of universities in Europe. University of Novi Sad has made many vital steps in promoting European values among its students and academics and working towards achieving the European area of education and learning. In accordance with the European and world trends, the development of the interdisciplinary character of contemporary studies has been conducted through further institutional strengthening of university centres for interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary postgraduate studies, which comprise the Association of Centres for Interdisciplinary and Multidisciplinary Studies and Developmental Research of the University of Novi Sad.
